For Michelle Tang's thrillingly original animated short film, THE BORROWER'S HYPNOTIST, I had the chance to do some really interesting things with the score from a narrative standpoint. I wrote two primary themes for the short; one is a pretty, but wistful seven-note theme for Aria (heard immediately in the first track), and the other is a propulsive ostinato in 7/8 time that represents the act of "borrowing." As the film goes on, Aria's theme is consumed by the borrowing ostinato until the last scene, where Aria's theme is hijacked by another character. I don't often get the opportunity to craft such a deliberate musical narrative, but Tang's elegantly plotted film was the perfect vessel. I think it's some of my best-ever scoring work.
